INTERIOR VIEWS WITH JUSTIN SALISBURY

Artist Residence has become synonymous with eclectic interiors, each hotel perfectly reflecting its location. We spoke to founder and director, Justin Salisbury, to find out more, and for a quick tour around two new apartments at their amazing Brighton hotel…

Eclectic inspiration…

We’re very much inspired by the local area, vibe and community, and we design each place with a nod to that – Brighton is laid-back and creative, with bright artist murals and neon lighting, whilst Oxfordshire has an eccentric English countryside feel. In Bristol we’ve celebrated the original features of the part-boot factory, part Georgian town house, juxtaposing industrial style and ‘unfinished’ surfaces with boheman and mid-century furniture, salvaged signage and statement artwork by Bristol artists. Penzance has a bit more of a coastal feel with light & airy bedrooms and striped fabrics off-set with bright artwork, and London is designed to feel like going to a ‘cool friend’s townhouse’, a little more understated in design with antiques,  statement four-poster beds and luxe bathrooms.

Selecting vintage pieces…

We’re always scouring the internet for vintage pieces to balance a design and add interest – particularly unusual light fittings, cabinets, decorative pieces or signage. We’re looking for interesting shapes or unique details that set the pieces apart from modern furnishings and we try to choose pieces that will get better with age.

Favourite vintage find

We sourced a panel of oversized vintage cotton reels for our Penzance hotel which was a really satisfying find. It’s rare to find a decorative piece to fit a space perfectly that isn’t artwork and it really adds unique texture and a point of interest.

Selecting artwork

When it comes to curating the art for our walls we look out for work that is bright, funny, nostalgic and full of character. We want our walls to be a talking point for our guests, something to make them chuckle, or recall fond memories…nothing that takes itself too seriously! We started out inviting local Brighton artists in to decorate our walls in exchange for board, so art has always played a big part in how our spaces look and feel, and we’re always on the lookout for up & coming artists in each of our locations.

Lighting for hotel rooms

We’re not big fans of spotlights, in general, wherever possible, we source an interesting pendant light and layer this with bedside lamps, desk lamps, wall lights all different heights, different shapes & styles. And never forget the dimmer switch!

Favourite Pure White Lines pieces

We’ve recently used the amazing Pink Palermo Wall Light and the fun 70s inspired Velvet Sienna Sofa in our new Brighton apartments, which have a bit of a mid-century feel.

What’s next for Artist Residence?

We’re settling into our most recent location in Bristol currently, but we love nothing more than creating new spaces and experiences for our guests so…who knows what could be around the corner!
