Fiona Duke’s latest project features all the carefully considered details and finishes you would expect, with the added bonus of being the designer’s own home! Fiona tells us about her beautiful renovation project and the inspiration behind her design choices.
The House:
It was built around 1915 I believe, so Edwardian.
The Inspiration:
Quite a lot of the original features had been removed so I wanted to reinstate architectural details such as coving and ceiling roses in the main part of the house and a marble fireplace in the front reception. However, I wanted to also add vintage and contemporary elements alongside this so that it felt like a mix of eras and styles to make it interesting.
The Details:
The hall flooring is vintage reclaimed encaustic tiling, so this instantly added a lot of colour and pattern to quite a large hallway. Because this already had a lovely ‘worn’ patina, I wanted to go a bit ‘glam’ on the pendant lighting to cause a bit of friction between the old flooring so the vintage Holophane globe lights I sourced from Pure White Lines were the perfect choice! I love the fact that these are different and a little unexpected in this otherwise quite traditional hallway.
I used this same approach on the landing area where the stairs are quite a heavy traditional wood, so when I combined it with your Amber Palermo Chandelier it created a great contrast with the glass and glamour!
In the front reception room, the reinstated fireplace is quite dominant, and I felt this needed strong lighting to balance so the Amber Palermo Wall lights very much hold their own against this statement red marble. It’s a great combo!
