BESPOKE SPUTNIK CHANDELIER FOR FRANK & FABER

Sarah Ellison, founder of London based interior design studio – Frank & Faber, commissioned Pure White Lines to create a bespoke Sputnik chandelier for their Kensington project. Sarah talks us through the design process of this remarkable room and light…

THE ROOM BRIEF:
Although blessed with exceptionally high ceilings, the property had been carved up into a series of small spaces with bland, dated interiors and a total absence of storage when our clients acquired it.

Our brief was to create a space which was in keeping with the heritage of the property but suited the family’s informal lifestyle and more contemporary taste. A key priority for the overall scheme was to introduce a sense of fun and colour into the home.

The house was reconfigured and re-furbished throughout creating a main open plan kitchen, dining, living space. This allowed us to keep the living room as a separate space, however we installed a glazed door to maximise the flow of light and the connection to the rest of the house.

Period details which had been removed, including stunning coving and fireplace were reinstated and restored to bring the bones of the property back to its former glory and these were set against a contemporary approach to fixtures and fittings. Full height bespoke storage was designed for every room to meet the demands of the busy family of 6 and we utilised the height within the rooms to maximise storage opportunities without compromising the footprint or aesthetic.

Whilst formal in proportion, our clients have an informal lifestyle and wanted the space to feel suitably elegant but also relaxed. They are not big TV watchers but wanted one in situ for rare TV viewing occasions – this was designed within the built-in joinery and neatly concealed behind a sliding panel with art in front.

BESPOKE SPUTNIK:
We wanted a fitting which would have a glamorous aesthetic without being too ornate or traditional in style. It also needed to do justice to and draw attention to the generous height in the room and the dark ceiling colour. The chosen piece picked up the subtle mid-century accents which feature on other furniture in the home as well as the brass accents which are used throughout and bring so much warmth to the scheme.

Our client was very particular about how the light would fall within the space and wanted something that could up light as well as providing a nice general glow and this fitting achieved aesthetic and functional requirements.

We worked hard to get the proportions exactly right to suit the furniture layout and overall room dimensions. The end result was the perfect finishing touch to the scheme and both we and the client are delighted with it.
